All flights entering Costa Rica fly into San Jose. Depending on if you take the “red eye” overnight flight or stay in San Jose overnight, you have many choices to get to Quepos. Fly a direct commuter flight from San Jose into Quepos. We recommend two different airlines. Sansa Air is located directly next to the San Jose terminal (you literally walk around one block to the adjacent corner). Nature Airlines is a twenty five minute taxi ride to Tobias Bolanos airport and is the world’s first carbon neutral airline.
Take an interbus down the coastline. This is about a four hour trip (with stops) and is a beautiful stress free way to see the country and the coastline. However, it takes some time due to the curvy road and other motorists which can slow down traffic. To book an Interbus we recommend Lynch Travel.
Rent a rental car in San Jose (rental car agencies are in the airport terminal) and drive down the coast. For the real adventurous traveler you can ride the community bus system. Bus service runs regularly between Quepos and San Jose (at San Jose’s Coca Cola bus terminal). The direct buses are reasonably clean, comfortable, and timely. Fares run around 6 dollars per person. The Coca Cola terminal is in the red-light district. This area can be dodgy as thieves have it marked for unsuspecting travelers. We advise our guests to be cautious and use common sense.
Since there really isn’t a nationalized public transit system, bus transportation in Costa Rica is managed and operated by small private companies that bid for conventional routes with the government. To reserve a seat, especially during the high season, buy your tickets in advance in person (or have someone do it for you). You cannot reserve seats via phone or internet.
There is a service for having your bus tickets ready and waiting when you arrive. The charge runs from $15 for one ticket to $25 for two tickets. This company purchases fares a couple of times a week so you must book your tickets in advance by 8 days. To access more information visit their website. Buses leave from the San Jose Terminal at 7:20 am, 10:20 am, 2:20, pm, and 4:20 pm, and 5:20 pm. The San Jose Quepos trip takes about four hours.
Make sure you purchase your return tickets in Quepos. Be sure to buy bus tickets a couple of days before you plan on traveling, especially during the high season and travel on Sundays.
